Leadership is scarcity

Leadership in Scarcity

The article being read this month for the district meetings by Mark Miller-McLemore lists 9 challenges of Scarcity.  The full article:March_2011_District_Papers[1]

  1.  The received heritage is ambiguous
  2. External expectations are often frustrating
  3. The reality of limitations means that many good ideas cannot be pursued.
  4. The pace of change is different
  5. Scarcity impacts staff
  6. Urgent tasks force us to “work beneath our station.”
  7. Multiple demands require incredible and sustained focus
  8. Orevaukubg cyktyrak oerceotuibs if syccess, mixed with healthy self-doubt, eat at our sencs that we are doing good ministry
  9. These factors lead to early morning panics

 The gifts are:

  1. Crisis can be clarifying
  2. Scarcity makes it harder to live in denial
  3. Scarcity forces us away from sloppiness and laziness
  4. The demands are many and varied, and they call upon us to use our gifts more fully
  5. The triage we are forced to practice is a form of discernment
  6. Dealing with scarcity brings us closer to the front lines of being human.
  7. More vulnerability is closer to our real situation before God.

His proposals for leading in scarsicty are

  1. Trust is the currency of leadership: build trust with competence, honesty and love.
  2. Creativity is free. Experiment
  3. Celebrate the victories
  4. Balance is crucial
  5. Persist. Long term minsitries are necessary for deep change.
